Rural
& Community Studies
Scholarship at BU
[December 2, 2005] BRANDON-Undergraduate and graduate students in the rural development program at Brandon University will benefit from $250,000 in funding being provided for a new provincial scholarship, Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Minister Rosann Wowchuk announced here today.
"This program helps students better understand the changing face of agriculture and the rapidly evolving social, economic and environmental issues in our rural regions, said Wowchuk. We need to encourage more students to pursue this career path to add to the skilled professionals who can help Manitobans prepare for and adapt to these issues."
The minister also noted this new scholarship is another step in the Growing Opportunities (GO) vision to make Brandon a centre of excellence for community and rural development.
"Brandon University is committed to initiatives that enhance rural communities, agriculture and rural development, and the provincial government has recognized this commitment through its continuous support and enhancement of our capacities in these areas," said Brandon University president Dr. Louis P. Visentin. "This new contribution to our Scholarship Endowment Fund will certainly leverage and encourage other donors to our campaign-it will be a boon to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers at BU, and it is a credit to this government's foresight."
The department of rural development is part of the faculty of arts. Scholarship criteria will be developed based on academics, financial need and limited to students from rural Manitoba. The criteria will be reviewed annually to ensure the scholarship meets with provincial expectations which are based on community consultations. The review will also ensure there is no duplication with other programs and that research is conducted within rural Manitoba.
The grant pool for the scholarship is being provided by a combination of funding from Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives and the Rural Economic Development Initiative (REDI).
Take a stand against impaired driving
[Sept 05] Hundreds of high schools across Canada participated in National Students Against Impaired Driving Day.
A national movement was held back in October, 2005, involving schools and other youth groups.
Programming Manuals and Kits were available with many fantastic ideas and items to help organize sober-driving events at school and in your community, on this day and throughout the year.
The 2005 kit included temporary tatoos, screensavers, T-shirts, bookmarks, posters, Frisbees and more!
It is never too late to develop your own promtion program to speak out against imapred driving. It could save one of your best friends' life. Call Natalie at (416) 243-1338 or email nsdlife@on.aibn.com for more information and to request your free Programming Manual.
