Minister recognizes 4-H Tradition in Manitoba

Oct. 19 to 25 was proclaimed 4-H Week in Manitoba today by Agriculture and Food Minister Rosann Wowchuk in recognition of the program's 90 years of service and leadership development for young people.

"For 90 years, 4-H has been providing leadership skills to many young rural Manitobans," said Wowchuk. "I would like to thank all the volunteers who have made significant contributions to their communities through their commitment to 4-H programming."

There are approximately 1,800 adult volunteers working with about 4,400 youth in 236 4-H clubs across Manitoba. In almost a century of service, 4-H has grown into an international program providing a wide range of activities and opportunities blending tradition and innovation to create a quality experience for the members, leaders and families involved.

Through its Learn To Do By Doing approach, 4-H members from ages eight to 19 have opportunities for personal and skill development in areas such as leadership, communication and meeting management as well as project knowledge that will lead to the improvement of agriculture and food practices in their communities. Club projects include learning about real world agriculture, money management, citizenship, health, environmental responsibility and entrepreneurship.

"Making agriculture attractive for young Manitobans is important, and we need to provide rural youth and adults with the skills and resources they need to make a career in agriculture a reality," Wowchuk said.
